Why Are So Many Pedestrians Dying?

On behalf of The Law Offices of Howard Kornberg Posted in Pedestrian Accident

Today, we want to bring you a story from nearby Fontana because it highlights many of the same problems we face here when it comes to pedestrian safety.

“You’re gone but never forgotten,” says a handwritten note tacked onto a utility pole near Laurel Avenue and Foothill Boulevard in Fontana.

The note is there for Carmen Valdez, a 58-year-old woman who was killed there when she was struck by a vehicle last month. She was the sixth pedestrian killed in traffic collisions this year in Fontana.

We still do not have all of the 2017 traffic collision data for California compiled yet, but the Governors Highway Safety Association has given us an alarming statistic: the number of pedestrian fatalities in California has increased by 27 percent from 2007 to 2016.

Do you know what to do if you or a loved one are injured by a negligent driver?

If you need a Los Angeles pedestrian accident attorney, you can count on the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg to provide you with an experienced pedestrian accident team. They will fight to ensure you are compensated for your injuries.

The Dangers

Whether you are out for an evening stroll or simply walking through a parking lot from your car to the grocery store, we know that the last thing you expect is to get struck by a vehicle.

For the latest reporting year in California, there were 14,215 pedestrian injuries from traffic collisions. There were 867 pedestrian fatalities.

Almost any time there is an accident involving a pedestrian, there is an injury or fatality.

Why?

Because pedestrians do not have any way to protect themselves from the impact of a vehicle. They are the most vulnerable group of people in or around the roadway. When they are struck, injuries can be severe. We commonly see:

  • Major soft tissue damage
  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Head and brain trauma
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Major intern organ damage

Any of the injuries above requires immediate and major medical intervention. Even if someone does survive those injuries, recovery can last for months and even years.

Often, pedestrians are permanently disabled after an accident.

Pedestrians are vulnerable to negligent driver behavior, especially the following:

  • Distracted drivers focus more on their phones than the roadway.
  • Drunk drivers decided to get behind the wheel.
  • Speeding and aggressive drivers who put other people’s lives in jeopardy.

What Are Your Options?

If you are injured in a pedestrian accident that was caused by someone else’s negligence, turn to the Law Offices of Howard Kornberg for help. We know that any accident is scary, particularly if you are dealing with injuries. While it may be tempting to settle with insurance companies, you may be entitled to more than they are offering.
