What Happened In This Case?
We have learned of a case that happened in late June that we want to bring to your attention. Police say that on June 29, a man in a wheelchair was struck by a hit-and-run driver while he was crossing the street in Santa Ana.
The collision happened at the intersection of First and Townsend streets. When police arrived, they found the victim in the roadway.
“The pedestrian was initially found to have a faint pulse and shallow breathing before all signs of life ceased,” the police department said in a news release. Officers performed CPR until OC Fire Authority paramedics took over. The victim was taken to the hospital and was in extremely critical condition.
The driver who struck the man in the wheelchair fled the scene and, as of this writing, has not been apprehended.
California Pedestrian Accidents Are Often Severe
Why did the incident above occur?
Why did the driver flee the scene?
We can only speculate at this point, but we know that many pedestrian crashes happen due to the negligence of a driver. We often find that these cases revolve around impaired or distracted drivers. Most of them happen in areas where the pedestrian has the right-of-way, such as intersections, sidewalks, and crosswalks.
For the latest reporting year, the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) says that there were 15,200 California pedestrian accident injuries in 2017. During that year, there were 811 California pedestrian crash deaths.
- California pedestrian crash deaths have increased by 14.2% from 2013 to 2017.
- The trend of both injuries and fatalities is increasing steadily each year.
