More Than Just Physical Injuries With Car Accidents

On behalf of The Law Offices of Howard Craig Kornberg posted in Car accidents

Over the summer, actress Melyssa Ford got into a near-fatal car accident. It has taken her a while to speak out about the incident, but what she has to say is very telling.

Yes, we know that vehicle accident can leave a person with severe physical injuries, but what is often overlooked is the emotional toll they can take on us.

At the Law Offices of Howard Craig Kornberg, we want you to know that we understand what you are going through.

What Happened

“I’m trying to jump back into my life but it feels like there are two Me’s: Before and After the crash,” Ford recently wrote on social media.

In the accident, Ford sustained a skull fracture and a concussion among other injuries. She says she may never remember what really happened in the incident, but she does know that she is now battling major depression. She says it was always there, but the crash made it crushing and malignant.

In An Accident

We know and talk about the usual results of vehicle accidents often, which range from minor to severe physical injuries:

  • Bumps and bruises
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Lacerations
  • Internal organ damage
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries

We know that the cost of these injuries can become tremendous. From the high medical bills to lost income if you are unable to work, vehicle accidents can cripple someone financially.

What we do not talk about enough is the emotional and psychological toll of these accidents. Victims often suffer symptoms like Ford described. Many people suffer from PTSD for years afterward. These are hidden injuries that people cannot see directly, but that does not make them any less real. They also cost money in much the same way that physical injuries do. From treatment to lost income, they are a financial burden as well.

Los Angeles had over 39,000 injuries and fatalities due to traffic accident related incidents in the latest reporting year. We are in a very busy area with millions of vehicles commuting every day. Often, these accidents are due to another driver’s negligence.

Distracted drivers and impaired drivers continue to plague California roadways, and nearly 50 percent of California drivers have admitted to making a driving mistake while talking on the phone or texting.

What are your options if someone else’s reckless behavior causes you harm?
