California Leads The Way In Dog Bites

On behalf of The Law Offices of Howard Craig Kornberg posted in Dog Bite

The results are in – California residents experience more dog bites than residents in any other state in the country.

We know, the last thing you probably think about when you go out to the park or walking down the road is your neighbor’s dog trying to bite you or your loved ones, but it can happen. When you consider that around 44 percent of all us household have dogs, dog bites are inevitable. You may be surprised to find out how common it actually is.

Around 4.7 million dog bites that occur each year in the Unites States, and many of those end up requiring medical attention.

Why?

Often, dog bites become infected and that can lead to more serious medical problems. If a dog bite is severe enough, long hospitalizations could be required.

Dogs have strong jaws. When they bite, they have the ability to inflict soft tissue damage that can require surgery to fix. Often, those who have been the victim of a dog bite experience long-term emotional problems and even PTSD.

According to State Farm insurance, around 20 percent of dog bites require medical attention. Out of 4.7 million dog bites, that is plenty of hospital visits each year.

Who is responsible for paying those medical bills?

Often, a person gets bitten by a dog because the dog’s owner was negligent in some way. Sometimes, a dog owner lets their dog roam unleashed, directly violating municipal leash laws. If they do this and their dog causes harm to someone, they can be held liable for the injuries.

If you or a loved one are the victims of a dog bite, report it to the appropriate authorities. What you may not know is that the dog that bit may have a history of being aggressive yet was still allowed to be around people.

The average payout for a dog bite settlement was $37,051.

Do you have that much money laying around to handle an emergency?

If the bite is severe enough to require surgery, the costs will certainly rise above that number.

Children make up more than 50 percent of all dog bite victims, largely due to the fact that they cannot get away quickly or fight back. The elderly are also extremely vulnerable to dog bites.
