A Pit Bull Changed This Man’s Daily Routine Forever: How to Hold Dog Owners Liable For Dog Attacks?

On behalf of The Law Offices of Howard Craig Kornberg posted in Dog Bite

A dog attack can cause life-threatening injuries, leave you disfigured for the rest of your life, and result in the death of your beloved pet. A Santa Clarita man learned it the hard way when he encountered a huge black pit bull and had to put down his little dog as a result of the bloody encounter.

Barry Beggs had been walking his little dog, Ruby, along with Valencia homes near Meadows Elementary School for the past decade. It had been part of his daily routine.

But one day – on December 10 – Beggs and his chihuahua/Jack Russell mixed breed dog became victims of a vicious dog attack, which left the man severely injured and covered in blood from head to toe and caused life-threatening injuries to Ruby.

Beggs, aged 78, was lucky to survive the dog attack in one piece. After all, not everyone is able to survive dog attacks involving a pit bull.

Fact: there was over 30 dog bite-related deaths in the U.S. in 2016. Of the 31 fatal dog attacks, pit bulls contributed to 71% of them.

Deadly danger of pit bulls in the U.S.

The brutal dog attack in Santa Clarita occurred when the angry pit bull knocked Beggs over, mauled him and viciously attacked his little dog. Ignoring his own injuries, Beggs attempted to get his dog out of the pit bull’s mouth.

Beggs did whatever he could to save Ruby’s life, but it was too late, the injuries were way too severe for a dog of Ruby’s size. Despite bleeding from his hands and arms, the 78-year-old man rushed to the nearest vet, only to hear from the doctor that there was internal bleeding inside and that the best option would be to put Ruby down to end its suffering.

Fact: of over 4.5 million Americans bitten by dogs every year, nearly 900,000 require medical attention.

After reviewing the dog attack, our Riverside dog attack attorney Howard Craig Kornberg says the importance of regulating pit bulls, which account for the vast majority of all dog bites in the U.S., cannot be underestimated.

After all, pit bulls, the breed that makes up only about 6% of the total U.S. dog population, are responsible for causing life-threatening injuries, disfigurement, and even disability in thousands of Americans across the country.

How to hold the owner liable for a dog attack?

Beggs also told the media that the owner of the pit bull did absolutely nothing to prevent the dog attack or stop his large pit bull from mauling the man and his little dog.

Contrary to the popular belief in California, if the owner of the aggressive pit bull gets caught and attempts to avoid responsibility by proving that the dog had no prior history of dog bites or aggression, he will still be held liable for Beggs’s injuries as well as his emotional distress and suffering associated with the loss of his beloved dog.

Our best dog attack attorneys in Riverside explain that holding dog owners liable for injuries and damages is much easier in California than in other states.

Fact: in the period between 2005 and 2016, pit bulls killed over 250 Americans across the U.S. The second most lethal dog breed, Rottweilers, killed 43 in the same period.
