If you or someone you love has an IVC filter then you are likely aware that there are risks involved with the implantation and removal of the devices. IVC filters are used in patients who are at risk of blood clots but cannot tolerate the use of anticoagulants (blood thinner medications) for medical reasons. The filters are placed into a person’s inferior vena cava. They look like small cage-like devices and are implanted surgically.

However, we now know that IVC filters from the manufacturers C.R. Bard and Cook Medical have been known to cause serious injuries and even death. Do you or a loved one have any of the following:

  • Bard’s Recovery®
  • G2®
  • G2® Express (G2®X)
  • Eclipse®
  • Meridian®
  • Denali® Vena Cava Filters

If so, then you may need to contact an IVC filter lawsuit attorney. At the Law Offices of Howard Craig Kornberg, we will work with you to investigate your medical history as well as any side effect you may be experiencing so we can chart a path forward to compensation.

What Can Happen?

IVC filters are not a replacement for traditional treatment for venous thromboembolism. For cases in which an IVC filter is recommended, most doctors do not suggest using it for more than long periods of time. In fact, it is recommended that they are removed 29 to 54 days after they have been implanted to avoid long-term consequences.

There have not been many clinical studies of IVC filter use, but we do know they can pose serious side effects. Some of those side effects include:

  • Device migration (the device moves from where it was implanted)
  • The filter fracturing
  • Vena cava perforation
  • Embolization (parts of the device move to the heart and lungs)
  • Difficulty removing the filter
  • Misplacement of the filter
  • Perforation of the small-bowel
  • Sudden death

Despite most of these devices being “removable filters,” most of them are not easily and successfully removed once the risk subsides for the patient. This is particularly concerning because it dramatically increases the long-term risk to patients.

What You Can Do Now

NBC News has reported that the manufacturer C.R. Bard possibly forged a letter to receive FDA approval of their IVC filter devices. The FDA has repeatedly warned the manufacturer of violation of federal law.
